Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an early-intervention approach for identifying, reducing and preventing problematic drug and alcohol use. SBIRT can be practiced in any healthcare setting, but practitioners need to be trained and learn about its benefits and receive guidelines for how to implement SBIRT in their own practice. SBIRT-TIPS will promote adoption of SBIRT practices throughout Iowa by training primary care nurse practitioner (NP) and physician assistant (PA) students and their clinical practice preceptors. The SBIRT TIPS project, beginning in 2015, is a three year grant awarded to the University of Iowa, College of Nursing (CON) and funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The Consortium helps establish SBIRT principles as well as conducts the process and outcome evaluation.
